Andrew Rooney is from Denver, Colorado, in the U.S., but as the son of an Army officer, he was raised all around the country and the world (including a brief period in India). For almost 20 years he has taught a wide range of writing and literature in the graduate schools at Denver University and Regis University and has taught undergraduates at the University of Colorado-Denver, Metro State, the American University of Nigeria and at China Agricultural University.
Rooney is mostly a novelist and short story writer, but he recently completed a play, Dvorak in Spillville, about the 100 days Antonin Dvorak spent in Spillville, Iowa. His sudden fiction story, “The Sound of One Hand,” was chosen as a winner of the Stories on Stage contest and performed in March 2015 at Su Teatro in Denver. His recent ekphrastic collaboration, with the artist Homare Ikeda, appeared in Write, I See, an arts catalogue. A recent short story, “Shelley and the Slipping Away,” appears in the Spring 2016 issue of Pinyon, A National Journal of Poetry, Fiction and Art. Four flash fiction stories appeared in Muse India in July-August 2017. His poem “Elegy for Darleen” appeared in the Emerald Coast Review in Fall 2017.
His short stories and chapters of novels have won contests, appeared in anthologies, and have been published in journals and magazines around the U.S. and internationally. His poetry has also appeared online and in periodicals around the world.
He has served as Writer-in-Residence for Colorado Humanities, and has been a guest lecturer at San Juan College, the Denver Art Museum, Lighthouse Writers, and others. He has an MFA in prose writing from Naropa University and an MSW from St. Louis University.
His features, columns, and non-fiction have appeared in the New York Times, Education Times, Christian Science Monitor, Denver Post, New Orleans Times-Picayune, Valley Courier, and PTI Journal and others. He has been a film and arts reviewer for a daily newspaper in Colorado, and a publisher and editor of a regional feature magazine in southern Colorado.
Rooney’s fiction collection, The Colorado Motet, was published by Ghost Road Press, in 2005. Travels in Ekphrasia, a collaborative art/writing chapbook, was published in 2006. A novella, Fall of the Rock Dove, was published by Mint Hill Books/Main Street Rag, in 2012. His collection of short stories, The Indian Motel Stories, was published in April of 2018 by Bombaykala Press.
